Event Information
Going The Distance Together is Shoulder To Shoulder’s (STS) inaugural walk for fatherless young men and will become an annual event. It is a 24-hour endurance walk to be held on the track at Martin Luther King, Jr., Technology Academy on Friday, September 18, from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. and on Saturday, September 19, from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.
Our Goals
STS’s goals are: to draw attention to the dramatic impact of generational fatherlessness in the inner city of Sacramento; to encourage men to mentor fatherless young men and women to serve single mothers, and to raise financial support for expanding Freedom Hall.
Why it matters?
Generational fatherlessness is prevalent in the inner city and stems from the lack of a father physically in the home over a span of generations. Most young men in this situation are raised and taught by women. They are confused about their identity and their role in the family as a husband, father, and bread-winner. Many display a lack of hope and direction, and have a negative outlook for their life. Experts suggest that a father makes a unique contribution to the developement of a young boy and his initiation into manhood.
WALK Teams Are Key!
Businesses, colleges, churches, schools, and service organizations can participate by forming a WALK TEAM to help get the word out into the greater Sacramento region about the impact of fatherlessness in the inner city and encourage people to support their WALK TEAM financially.
A gathering staged in the middle and around the track at MLK will include booths, food, games, music, radio station broadcasting, controlled entry, speakers, and may include motorcycle clubs, car clubs, more.
We Need Sponsors!
Sponsors are being sought for the Going The Distance Together to provide in kind or cash to cover event costs estimated to be $12,500. Sponsors endorsements and participation will assist in reaching the greater Sacramento community about this very important social concern. We are asking community-minded individuals, service organizations, churches and businesses to support this great cause by becoming an inaugural sponsor partner. Strike a blow for the fatherless by joining STS as a sponsor.
The WALK Needs Volunteers!
